Senior Associate
Dorien’s practice is focused on data protection (in particular conducting data audits, GDPR compliance strategies, personal data breach management), IT matters (such IT contracts, internet/social media presence, ecommerce, domain names), and intellectual property (in particular copyright, trademark law, company- and tradenames), both advisory and (pre-) litigious work (negotiations, legal proceedings and mediation). In addition, she has extensive advisory and litigious experience in consumer law and unfair market practices (in particular related to advertisement, marketing and the organisation of contests).
She works for both domestic and international clients across a wide variety of sectors, including start-ups, SMEs, large multinationals and non-government organisations in amongst others the automotive, logistics, energy, hospitality and (FMCG) retail sector.
For example, she has been assisting clients:
in the automotive sector regarding topics such as exploitation of big data, e-mobility (including EV-charging and connected vehicle applications) and the use of geo-location systems;
in the energy sector on the use of batteries, as part of a more efficient energy management system, including the use for grid services, load balancing and peak shaving;
in the energy sector regarding their publicity for new types of energy contracts;
in the logistics sector regarding the set-up of a data sharing platform involving different actors in the industry, including the use and exploitation of such data;
in the logistics sector regarding R&D projects to develop enhanced technology for automated machinery and detection materials;
in the (FMCG) retail sector with publicity campaigns, website compliance and disputes regarding data protection, misleading/unfair comparative advertising, unfair market practices, etc.
Dorien is a member of the Brussels Bar since 2015 and joined Liedekerke in 2015. She became Senior Associate in 2021.

assisted and advised Volkswagen AG on all aspects related to (personal) data protection and data exchange in the context of its connected car program deployment in Belgium including various applications and functionalities (e.g. ID-tool, charging apps, parking apps...);
assisted the Flemish Government and official Flemish institutions in several projects concerning the processing and transfer of personal data and the drafting of related documents, including drafting legislation and advising on data protection aspects of smart meter deployment, including providing in-depth data protection advice (including advice on the division of roles between the different actors involved, the legal basis for processing, the need for data processing agreements, etc.);
assisted Inno on several occasions such as in the context of:
the deployment of a B2C platform, including aspects related to data protection, transfer of personal data (outside the EEA), privacy policies, e-commerce law and consumer law aspects (including drafting terms and conditions);
the management of personal data breaches affecting a large amount of customer personal data;
assisted DP World on several projects such as:
representing DP World in contract negotiations with different actors in the port of Antwerp regarding the set-up of a data sharing platform; and
in the context of an R&D project to develop an automated reefer rack system, including development of complex robotics technology;
assisted Car-Pass, a non-profit organization entrusted by the legislator with a public interest mission in the automotive sector, in several projects concerning the processing and transfer of personal data and the drafting of related documents, including
exploring the possibilities of further commercialization of the data contained in the Car-Pass database, including a feasibility study by which we assessed the possible limits and conditions of the project to comply with the applicable law, including the GDPR;
assistance in drafting new legislation in order to take into account the new contemplated processing activities and to bring it in compliance with the GDPR;
assisted S. Mees, a designer, in a litigation regarding the infringement of his copyright and design rights vested in a light fixture he designed and is currently unlawfully commercialised by a light producer on the market;
assisted LCL datacentre with the drafting of new template services agreements as well as in the context of several contract negotiations for colocation services, including the contract negotiations with Microsoft for the establishment and deployment of a new, Microsoft dedicated datacentre;
assisted Lidl Belgium on several advisory questions regarding contemplated publicity campaigns (e.g. assessing the risks of claims for misleading advertising, unlawful comparative advertising and unfair market practices);
assisted Lidl Belgium in the context of (pre-)litigation negotiations with third parties claiming unlawful use of their trademarks and unfair market practices by Lidl in advertising and selling allegedly infringing products;
assisted Loop Management with advice on the feasibility, points of attention and necessary actions to undertake in the context of its contemplated business activities under the name “Okto” (a communications platform, allowing customers to communicate with the their clients through existing communication tools such as WhatsApp), from an IP, IT and data protection point of view;
